A brand is not just a logo

September 18, 2026. 3 minute read.

When someone says “I need a brand,” they are almost always asking for a logo. The logo is the visible part, but the brand is what people think and feel about your business when you're not around.

What a brand does include

  • Positioning: what you are, who it's for and why people choose you.
  • Voice: how you speak in your copy, your social media and your replies.
  • Visual identity: logo, colors and typefaces.
  • Usage rules: a manual so everything looks the same everywhere.

Order matters

First you define who you're talking to and what sets you apart. Then you design. Do it the other way around and the design ends up being a matter of taste instead of a decision with reasons.

How to tell if your brand works

  • Someone who doesn't know you understands what you sell in five seconds.
  • Your website, your social media and your invoices look like the same business.
  • You can explain why you chose your colors and your tone of voice.

If any of the three fails, you don't need to change the logo. You need to sort out what's behind it.
